Weight Watchers adding sparkle to the drinks market

Taking advantage of the strong growth seen in the flavoured water market, Weight Watchers has launched into the drinks sector.

Its current flavoured water range, which includes both still and sparkling formats, consists of Still Cranberry, Still Mandarin & Lemon and Sparkling Grapefruit & Lime. All are available in 500ml bottles.

The drinks contain two per cent fruit juice as well as natural flavourings with a Weight Watchers POINTS® value of 0 and only eight to 11 calories per bottle.

Strong emphasis has been placed on fortification, with each drink containing 17 per cent of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of calcium and 17 per cent RDA of magnesium, good for the teeth, bones, heart and immune system.

The company's success in its first nine months is reported to have been outstanding and as a result it has now introduced Weight Watchers Vending Machines. These were exhibited for the first time at the recent Leisure Industry Week show, where they created tremendous interest.

A new player to the market, United Drinks was formed in August 2005 under licence of Weight Watchers International, and, as well as introducing the new Weight Watchers Vending Machine, will be extending its portfolio of soft drinks in January 2007 with the introduction of 500ml Ready-to-Drink Fruit Drinks, great tasting, 'healthy refreshment' beverages enhanced with a range of vitamins.
